A rare and harmonious set of five Finnish ceramic butter jars, known in Finland as voipytty, produced by Arabia in the early 1900s through the 1930s. This set consists of relatively medium to large vessels originally intended for storing butter and dairy products in cool pantries before refrigeration became common.
The jars are characterized by thick ceramic bodies, softly rounded forms, integrated side handles, and delicate hand-painted blue floral decoration. Practical in origin, yet quietly elegant in expression. While highly collectible, these jars remain deeply usable today. They function well as kitchen storage jars, countertop vessels, herb or plant containers, decorative urns, or understated storage elements in modern, rustic, or country interiors.
The set is offered as a group of five. Please note that we currently have another set of Finnish butter jars listed separately, consisting of seven pieces in varying sizes. A timeless example of early twentieth-century Finnish functional design. All pieces are in good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and use. Most pieces stamped Arabia. The measurements are of the largest jar while the smallest measures 14cm in height x 24 X 19cm. The tallest, also known as a honey jar is 29cm high.
Founded in 1873, Arabia is Finland’s most important ceramic manufacturer and a cornerstone of Nordic material culture. Early utilitarian wares such as these butter jars formed the backbone of Arabia’s production, objects designed for everyday life, durability, and longevity long before Finnish design gained international recognition.
