An iconic flush mount model A622, designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1950s and manufactured by Valaisinpaja Oy in Finland during the 1980s. Originally created for the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki in 1953, the A622 A reflects Aalto’s signature balance of functionality and refined modernism.
Constructed from layered painted metal, the sculptural shade softly diffuses light while minimizing glare, creating a warm and atmospheric illumination suitable for residential and public interiors alike. Its understated form and architectural presence make it a timeless example of Scandinavian modern lighting design.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with minor age-related wear and retains the manufacturer’s stamp inside. At the moment we have two of these and also another two of the smaller version A 622 B in case you are looking for more than one. Please see photo with the lamp next to the smaller version for comparison.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was one of the most influential figures in Scandinavian modern design. Internationally celebrated for his architecture and furniture, Aalto developed a distinctly organic approach to modernism, creating harmonious interiors that integrated furniture, lighting, and architecture into a unified whole. His designs remain highly collectible and are represented in major museums and private collections worldwide.
