A charming and highly unusual set of six Finnish Mid-Century dining chairs crafted in solid pine, likely commissioned for the home of Eero Saari, the longtime chairman of Airam, one of Finland’s most influential lighting and electrical companies during the early and mid-20th century. While no designer has yet been conclusively identified, the chairs possess a distinct architectural character that places them firmly within the tradition of Scandinavian modernism.
Their design is remarkably restrained, relying on proportion, material, and craftsmanship rather than ornamentation. The gently tapering backrests, pierced with practical handholds, rise from broad plank seats supported by subtly splayed legs, creating a silhouette that feels both rustic and sophisticated. The honest expression of the pine, with its visible knots and grain patterns, gives the chairs warmth and individuality while reinforcing their utilitarian roots.
There are clear affinities with the work of Swedish designer Einar Axel Hjorth, particularly his celebrated Sportstugemöbler (summer cottage furniture), where vernacular craftsmanship and modernist simplicity merged into a uniquely Scandinavian aesthetic. The chairs also recall certain works by Finnish designer Werner West, whose furniture often balanced functionality with a similarly sculptural simplicity. Yet these chairs retain a character of their own, sitting comfortably between refined cabin furniture, early modernism, and the emerging organic tendencies that would later define Nordic design.
Their minimalist construction makes them surprisingly versatile. Equally at home in a rustic country setting, a contemporary interior, or a carefully curated Mid-Century environment, they offer a timeless quality that transcends stylistic trends. The set displays a beautiful patina developed over decades of use, with wear, marks, and variations in colour consistent with age, all contributing to their authentic character and history.
A rare opportunity to acquire a complete set of six Finnish pine chairs that capture the essence of Nordic modernism at its most honest: functional, understated, and deeply connected to material and place.
