A striking Art Deco floor lamp from Finland, dating from the 1930s–1940s, combining warm curly birch with slender brass detailing and two independently adjustable light sources.
The sculptural wooden base and tapered central support are crafted in beautifully figured curly birch, giving the lamp a strong architectural presence. Rising from the top are two elegant brass stems of different heights, each terminating in a flexible gooseneck that allows the light to be directed as desired. The contrasting heights and gently curving necks give the otherwise geometric design a particularly graceful and dynamic silhouette.
The combination of polished wood, brass, and softly shaped shades is characteristic of the transition between Nordic Art Deco and the emerging functionalism of the period. Particularly attractive is the balance between the substantial, angular wooden base and the remarkably light and delicate brass structure above.
Both decorative and highly functional, the lamp works beautifully beside a sofa or armchair, where the two adjustable lights can be positioned independently for reading or ambient illumination. Its understated materials and strong proportions also allow it to sit comfortably in both classical and modern interiors.
The designer and manufacturer remain unknown. A beautiful and unusual example of Finnish lighting design from the 1930s–1940s.
The measurements (width and depth) are of the table part and the lamp arms extend to around 70cm in normal position.
