Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs White Välipala Modular Shelf Unit, HMN 1960s

11280,00

Designed in the 1950s by Carl-Gustaf “Nalle” Hiort af Ornäs, the Välipala shelving system has since become a true Finnish modern classic. Recently taken back into production, it remains as relevant today as when first conceived; a testament to its quiet intelligence and enduring form.

This example is particularly rare. Except for the base shelf/bench, it is finished entirely in white for a fresh and striking interpretation, whereas the legs are more commonly seen in black. The all-white execution gives the piece a lighter, more architectural presence, allowing it to blend effortlessly into both minimal and more eclectic interiors.

The beauty of the Välipala lies in its modularity. The horizontal levels can be added or removed, meaning the overall height can vary significantly depending on configuration. It can be assembled high and sculptural, or kept low and restrained. The possibilities are nearly endless. The unit works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, studios, and even children’s spaces. Without the upper shelves, the base itself functions elegantly as a TV table or side bench, further underlining the thoughtful versatility of the design.

The unit is stamped.

Carl-Gustaf “Nalle” Hiort af Ornäs (1911–1996) was a Finnish interior architect and designer, best known for the iconic Siesta armchair from 1952. In 1945, he founded Puunveisto Oy, where he developed innovative plywood processing techniques that helped shape Finnish modern design. In his later years, Hiort af Ornäs lived in Spain, where he also designed several buildings in the Los Pacos neighborhood of Fuengirola, a well-known enclave among Finns.
