A 1950s–60s Finnish step stool from the Herttoniemi Library in Helsinki that still carries the city stamp to the bottom. Crafted from iron with a circular wooden seat. This practical piece reflects the straightforward, durable design language typical of mid-century Finnish public furnishings. Its tall T-shaped handle was designed for easy movement around the library, giving the stool both function and a distinctive silhouette.
This example appears to have been repainted in a soft blue tone at a later date, but still decades ago. The finish shows honest wear, with chips, scuffs and a lived-in patina that enhances the stool’s utilitarian appeal. The combination of colour, form and age gives it a decorative presence that makes it equally suitable as a small side table, plant stand, extra seat or just to get those extra 30cm to reach for that higher kitchen cabinet.
A functional and characterful piece of Finnish everyday design. If you are looking for two, we currently have another one available in original white.
