A graceful mid-century floor lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Idman in Finland. The lamp is executed in brass and features a natural leather wrapping around the stem, topped with delicate crystal details that add a subtle decorative accent. The shade is made of paper string in a natural tone and houses three light sources, creating a warm, layered glow. When illuminated, the crystals gently reflect the light, adding depth and softness without overpowering the design.
The combination of brass, leather, crystal, and paper string is characteristic of Tynell’s ability to balance classical ornamentation with modern simplicity. This lamp sits comfortably in both contemporary and traditional interiors, bringing warmth, texture, and atmosphere to a space rather than functioning as purely utilitarian lighting.
The lamp is stamped Idman and remains in its original condition. The leather is intact with a strong patina, and the brass has developed a natural patina consistent with age. Please refer to the photographs for details.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is regarded as the most important lighting designer in Finnish history. Often referred to as the man who “illuminated Finland,” his work is represented in major public buildings and international collections, including the Finnish Parliament House and the United Nations headquarters in New York. His postwar designs from the late 1940s and 1950s are especially celebrated today for their poetic use of light and refined craftsmanship.
