An early 20th century Finnish cupboard designed by Eliel Saarinen for the Munkkiniemi Pensioners building in 1918. The cupboard is in it’s original painted colour wood with a nice patina.
Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950) was an internationally renowned Finnish Architect and a furniture designer. Saarinen was born in Finland but moved to the US early on in his career, and started to gain attraction for his Art Nouveau style buildings and work as an exhibition architect. After placing second in a design contest for skyscrapers held by the Chicago Tribune, Eliel’s bold architectural style began to heavily influence the way that skyscrapers were built in the US. Eliel also paved the way for his son Eero Saarinen, who arguably became an even more prominent architect, known for example for the St. Louis Gateway Arch.. Eliel has received countless honors and recognitions including multiple gold medals, honorary doctorates (Harvard, Cambridge etc.), Finnish medals of Honour and streets, buildings, squares and parks named after him in Finland, the United States and Paris.
