A beautiful and exceedingly rare stool from the mid 1960s by Finnish designer Perttu Mentula for Artek. This “active man stool” as it was called was only produced for a short time in the mid 1960s by Artek.
The light weight stool was marketed as a stool for the active person and worked perfect for saunas and beaches. It has handles that enable a proactive approach to exercising rather than just sitting. The sketches attached are by Perttu Mentula himself and were published in an article about the stool in “beautiful house” magazine in 1965.
Perttu Mentula (1936-2009) was a Finnish interior architect, furniture and textile designer. He was one of the most important names in plastic furniture design. Mentula held many awards both localy and internationally from Japan to Denmark and most notably the 1965 Milano Triennale.
