A large table lamp model 944-420 “La Boheme” designed by Heikki Turunen and manufactured by Orno Oy in the 1970s in Finland. The lamp features a minimalist design with a yellow acrylic mushroom shaped body topped with white acrylic dome hovering on top of a see through base giving the illusion of floating. The lamp is in good original condition and is stamped Stockmann on the inside.
Orno was one of the leading lamp manufacturers in Finland during the middle of the 20th century. Along with companies like Taito Oy, Idman and Itsu they defined what Finnish design lamps would become. Orno made high quality lamps and produced them for major projects.
Heikki Turunen (1937-) was a Finnish lighting designer who began his career at Stockmann-Orno’s design office, as an assistant to head designer Lisa Johansson-Pape. Soon, he had the opportunity to create his own lighting designs, leading to a 38-year tenure as the chief designer at Stockmann-Orno and work at Thorn Lighting Oy, where he focused on product development and visual branding. His designs, known for harmoniously combining light, color, and form while considering technical lighting aspects, include notable models like Reflex, Efekti, and the iconic La Boheme table lamp. Turunen’s contributions have significantly impacted Finnish design, inspiring new generations of designers with his innovative solutions. His work gained international recognition in 1993 when his Avanti lamp was selected for the Élysée Palace, marking a significant acknowledgment of Finnish design and the quality of Turunen’s work.
