A charming 1950s Finnish ceiling lamp featuring five cream beige flower-bud like glass shades, embodying the elegant simplicity and elegance of mid-century Scandinavian design. While reminiscent of Paavo Tynell’s iconic fixtures, this piece represents the more accessible lighting options that flourished during Finland’s postwar design boom – created for those who admired Tynell’s aesthetic but sought more affordable alternatives. Such lamps were offered by many retailers in the 1950s including Stockmann, Helsinki’s legendary department store that served as the premier retailer for all major Finnish lighting manufacturers including Orno, Taito, and Idman.
In beautiful vintage condition, the lamp retains all its original components including the beautiful brass decorative elements characteristic of 1950s Finnish design. The five gracefully curved glass shades maintain their soft opaline colour and mimic flowering buds. The brass parts show a somewhat heavy patina that speaks to its age and authenticity, but works well. A wonderful example of Mid century Finnish design that made quality lighting accessible to a wider audience while maintaining the aesthetic standards of the golden age of Scandinavian modernism.
