Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) began his career as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts under the influential Kaare Klint. After graduating in 1938, he worked as Klint’s assistant before becoming one of the leading figures of Danish Modernism. His designs, characterized by clean lines, natural materials, and uncompromising functionality, were exhibited internationally in cities including Zurich, New York, Paris, and London. He received numerous distinctions throughout his career, among them the Eckersberg Medal in 1950.
Mogensen famously believed that furniture should be practical enough for everyday family life. He often tested prototypes himself—with help from his children, who enthusiastically climbed and jumped on them—to ensure they could withstand decades of use. This commitment to durability, comfort, and timeless design has made his work some of the most enduring and sought-after in the history of Scandinavian furniture.
