A modernistic large and low sofa table from the Saturn (Saturnus) series by one of the most celebrated contemporary Finnish designers Yrjö Kukkapuro, aka The Grand Old Man of Finnish design. The table made of strengthened fiberglass painted in white, wood formica top and metal. The table is in it’s original condition and produced by Haimi which dates it to the 1960s-70s as later items were made by the succeeding company Avarte. The table is in good condition with normal wear expected with this age. There is some text to the bottom and a small minor fixed chip on the edge of the side. Please note that at the moment we have other pieces from the same set that came from the same clearance.
Born in Vyborg in 1933, Yrjö Kukkapuro has ascended to the pinnacle of international design. Discovered as a young talent during his studies at the Art Institute, Kukkapuro’s career spans over 60 years, during which he has designed numerous chairs, many of which are featured in museum collections worldwide. Notable classics still in production include the Ateljee, Remmi, and Moderno series, as well as the iconic Karuselli lounge chair, which began its global journey in 1964. Kukkapuro is also renowned for his office and auditorium chairs, with tens of thousands sold globally. Please note that at the moment we have another chair and stool coming with a slightly rougher patina on the leather.
Kukkapuro’s design philosophy revolves around the three E’s: ergonomics, aesthetics, and ecology, with sustainable quality at its core. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate and received prestigious accolades such as the Valti Award, the Kaj Franck Design Award, and the Lunning Prize. Today, Kukkapuro continues to work in his studio in Kauniainen. Sadly we just heard today that Yrjö kukkapuro died yesterday on the 8th of February 2025. According to his daughter he worked all the way up to the end.
