Paavo Tynell Commissioned Chandelier, Taito 1950s

A stunning and most probably unique chandelier by Paavo Tynell for Taito, dating from the late 1940s to early 1950s. The model appears in the Idman catalogue no. 142 among specially commissioned lamps rather than standard production pieces, further underlining its rarity and importance.

The chandelier features an elegant eight-arm composition arranged on a geometric grid-like structure, softened by Tynell’s characteristic organic detailing. Delicate brass mesh leaf elements rise gracefully between the arms, while decorative brass ornaments accent the lower intersections of the frame. The flowing curvature of the arms and suspension rods gives the piece a remarkable sense of lightness despite its substantial scale. It is worth mentioning that the mesh used, is much heavier and sturdier than the usual used in floral bouquet lamps or snowflakes for example.

Executed entirely in brass, the chandelier is paired with newly remade pleated silk-like fabric shades that beautifully diffuse the light and complement the warmth of the polished metal. The refined balance between architectural structure and decorative elegance is quintessentially Tynell.

A truly exceptional and, as far as we know, unique example that commands attention in any interior. Equally suited for a grand living room, dining room, entrance hall, or hospitality setting, the chandelier functions as both a lighting fixture and sculptural focal point.

The lamp has been fully restored and professionally polished, with all shades newly produced using high-quality pleated fabric faithful to the spirit of the original design.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is regarded as one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland.” His works were created for landmark interiors including the Finnish Parliament House and the United Nations headquarters in New York. After co-founding Taito Oy in 1918, Tynell became internationally renowned for combining superb craftsmanship with softly organic, nature-inspired forms. Today, his brass lighting designs from the 1940s and 1950s are among the most sought-after pieces in Scandinavian design.
