Paavo Tynell Perforated Horseshoe Table Lamp 9224 in Brass & Leather Taito 1950s

31200,00

The rare perforated version and among the finest examples of the model 9224 table lamps we have encountered. This model is often referred to as the “Horseshoe” due to its distinctive horseshoe-shaped foot and elegant, equine-like stance. In a 1950s edition of the Finland House lighting catalogue, however, it was given the evocative nickname Thoroughbred, not merely because of the base. A thoroughbred is a hot-blooded racing horse breed known for its agility, refined proportions and lean physique; a well-chiseled head, long slender neck and taut body. The comparison feels remarkably precise.

The arched base, elongated stem and poised funnel shade create a silhouette that is disciplined yet dynamic. With the leather-wrapped stem resembling a harness, the metaphor becomes complete. Designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy, this example features the desirable perforated funnel-shaped brass shade paired with a dark walnut-brown leather-covered stem. The perforations allow the light to shimmer softly through the brass, adding atmosphere and depth when illuminated.

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition with a beautiful, even patina. The brass parts have been carefully polished while respecting the character of age. The electricity has been updated and the leather was renewed. The lamp is in fine working order. The base is stamped by the manufacturer “Taito.”

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of the leading figures in Finnish lighting design and co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918. Often described as the man who “illuminated Finland,” he was instrumental in shaping Finland’s modern lighting identity and later achieved international success, particularly in the United States during the late 1940s and 1950s. Today, his works are among the most sought-after pieces of 20th-century lighting design.
