Pair of Modernist Flush Mounts, Architect Ola Laiho, Valaisinpaja Finland 1980s

A rare pair of architectural flush mount ceiling lamps designed by Finnish architect Ola Laiho (1934–2025) and manufactured by Valaisinpaja in Finland.
Executed in white painted metal with two layered glass diffusers, these lamps embody a distinctly Nordic approach to light that is restrained, purposeful, and quietly poetic. The design is built around clarity of form and function. As these lamps were designed for the main hall in the Finnish National Gallery the Ateneum they were purposefully designed with a minimal functional approach not to compete with the art in the room while offering ambience light and a beautiful calm architectural statement. The design features a wide circular glass disc floating beneath the ceiling, softening and spreading the light outward, while the sculptural metal body below creates depth and rhythm, drawing the eye inward toward the glowing core. When illuminated, the lamps produce a gentle halo effect against the ceiling, offering both ambient warmth and architectural presence.

These fixtures are believed to have originated from the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki after the latest renovation. The lamps however were originally designed during the first big renovation that expanded the use of the museum and was held during the late 1980s until 1990, before opening again in 1991, where Laiho led the architectural team responsible.

The lamps are stamped Valaisinpaja Oy.

Ola Laiho was a respected Finnish architect known for his thoughtful modernism and sensitivity to space, light, and material. His career spanned several decades, during which he contributed to numerous civic and cultural projects across Finland. Laiho approached architecture holistically, treating lighting not as an afterthought but as an integral part of spatial experience. His work reflects a quiet confidence, favoring proportion, atmosphere, and human scale over visual excess.
