A beautiful pair of serving trays, model TW 225, designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Kultakeskus in Finland in 1959. Combining sculptural simplicity with exceptional craftsmanship, the trays feature gently curved alpaca (nickel silver) bodies framed by elegant solid teak handles. Their elongated, leaf-like silhouette is characteristic of Wirkkala’s ability to transform everyday functional objects into timeless works of art inspired by the Finnish landscape and nature. The model remained in production throughout the 1960s and was also made in sterling silver as a made-to-order luxury version.
Beautifully balanced in both form and function, these trays are equally suited for serving bread, pastries, fruit, or hors d’oeuvres, while also making striking decorative centrepieces when not in use. The warm tone of the teak contrasts elegantly with the cool satin sheen of the alpaca, creating a refined yet understated expression that fits seamlessly into both mid-century and contemporary interiors.
Both trays remain in good vintage condition with a patina to the teak and light surface scratches to the alpaca consistent with age and careful use. They present beautifully and retain their original character. The upper side was polished at some point as the under side is much darker.
