A charming and exceptionally rare pair of model 54-101 table lamps by Lisa Johansson-Papé for Orno, Finland, from the 1950s. These bijou lamps feature tapered wooden bodies in their original white paint, decorated around the lower section with rounded brass “buttons” painted dark green. Short brass stems complete the understated yet playful design.
The contrast between the pale wood surfaces and green decorative details gives the lamps a distinctive character. Their petite proportions make them particularly appealing as bedside lamps, placed at either end of a sideboard, or displayed together on a console. The later pleated shades complement the bases beautifully, softly diffusing the light and adding texture to the simple silhouettes.
The original painted surfaces have developed a gorgeous patina, with fine age-related cracking, scratches, and areas of paint loss revealing the wood beneath. The brass fittings and painted buttons also show attractive wear consistent with age and use. These details lend each lamp its individual character while preserving the coherence of the pair. A rare model to encounter individually, and exceptionally rare to find as a pair.
Lisa Johansson-Papé (1907–1989) was a Finnish designer best known for her lighting for Orno. Her work combined practical consideration of light with an elegant, often gently playful approach to form, making her an important figure in Finnish mid-century lighting design.
