A striking set of seven “Kaksi Vaihetta” (Two Stages) art glass vases, aka as Bambu Vases, designed by Oiva Toikka and produced by Nuutajärvi, Finland, between 1967 and 1969. Available for only a brief production period, this series is among Toikka’s earliest artistic explorations of sculptural blown glass and remains one of his most recognizable and sought-after designs.
Each vase is composed of two stacked cylindrical forms united by a pronounced collar, creating a playful architectural silhouette that appears both balanced and effortlessly simple. The organically textured surface captures and refracts light beautifully, while the vibrant palette of turquoise, emerald green, ruby red, amethyst, amber, yellow, and clear glass highlights Toikka’s remarkable understanding of colour and transparency. Whether displayed together as an installation or individually throughout an interior, the vases create an ever-changing composition of light, form, and colour.
Designed during the formative years of Oiva Toikka’s celebrated career, the Kaksi Vaihetta series reflects the experimental spirit that would later make him one of Finland’s most internationally acclaimed glass artists. Produced by Nuutajärvi, one of Finland’s most distinguished glassworks, these pieces embody the exceptional craftsmanship for which Finnish art glass is renowned.
This set comprises seven examples in a variety of colours. Every vase is signed, all are in excellent vintage condition, and together they form an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a complete and visually captivating group from one of the defining series of Finnish studio glass of the 1960s.
The height, 42cm is for the tallest examples, the shorter ones stand at 27cm.
