A charming “pair” of Juttu stools, aka mushroom stools, designed by Eero Aarnio for Asko in the early 1960s. Introduced in 1961, the Juttu jakkara was Aarnio’s first stool design and the piece that brought him his earliest international attention. The idea famously came to him in Hong Kong when he turned a basket upside down—a simple gesture that resulted in one of the most recognizable forms in Finnish design.
Made of woven rattan with a rattan-and-bamboo base, the stools embody the lightness and natural warmth of early Aarnio. Their sculptural silhouette allows them to function equally well as stools or as small side tables, and their organic form blends easily into a wide range of interiors. Both examples are in fully original condition, each with its own soft, appealing patina and traces of use consistent with age.
Eero Aarnio (b. 1932) is one of Finland’s most influential designers, known for his pioneering work with plastics and fiberglass in the 1960s. His creations—including the Ball Chair, Bubble Chair and Pastilli—became icons of modern design and helped define the visual language of the era. Aarnio’s works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and he has received numerous awards such as the Red Dot Design Award. A beautifully preserved pair of an early Aarnio design—functional, sculptural and full of character.
