Two large Rhythmic Veneer Bowls by Wilh. Schauman Oy, Finland 1980s

2880,00

Two large decorative bowls crafted entirely in rhythmic veneer using the classic spinning technique by Wilhelm Schauman Oy, one of Finland’s major mid-century wood and furniture manufacturers. Each bowl comes with a silver presentation plaque on the underside, gifted to different dignitaries in 1982 and 1984, adding a layer of provenance and period charm. Sculptural and modern in character, the bowls echo the language of Tapio Wirkkala’s rhythmic veneer work.

Though conceived as decorative objects, they are sturdy and absolutely usable — ideal as fruit bowls, centrepieces on larger dining tables, or as elegant catch-alls in an entrance hall. The warmth of the wood and the precision of the craftsmanship give them a timeless presence. According the Finnish Forestery Museum Lusto, the dishes might be by Martti Hyppänen who has designed most of Schuman’s wooden bowls or possibly Anna-Maija Halonen who has also designed bowls for the company.
