Exceptionally Rare Paavo Tynell Table Lamp for Taito, Finland, 1930s

50880,00 €

An exceptionally rare early table lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Taito in Finland during the 1930s. Rooted in the functionalist ideals of the period, the lamp combines a restrained hemispherical shade with an unusually sculptural brass stem and beautifully balanced proportions.

The original shade retains its distinctive muted green finish, which contrasts elegantly with the warm patina on the brass structure. Two light sources are concealed beneath the broad shade, providing a soft, atmospheric light while preserving the lamp’s clean architectural silhouette.

This historically important model was used at Kantola, the functionalist villa built for the director of the Sunila Pulp Mill. An example of the lamp remains in its original setting at the villa. The design was also documented in the 1938 Ornamo annual, providing valuable period confirmation of its early date and significance within Finnish lighting design. See last two photos.

The lamp remains in original condition, including its original finishes and beautifully aged patina. Only the electrical wiring has been renewed for safe use. The lamp is stamped “Taito” on the inside.

A true rarity from the formative years of Finnish modernism, this model has seldom, if ever, appeared on the open market. Its documented architectural provenance and sculptural presence make it an exceptional piece for an important collection or interior.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers and a co-founder of Taito Oy, established in 1918. Trained as a metalworker, Tynell combined technical knowledge with exceptional craftsmanship and a refined understanding of light. His work ranged from functionalist designs of the 1930s to the more decorative brass lighting for which he later became internationally renowned. Tynell created lighting for many significant Finnish interiors and public buildings, and his designs played an important role in shaping the identity of modern Finnish lighting.
