A beautiful ceiling lamp designed by Gunnel Nyman and manufactured by Idman in Finland during the 1940s. Model 20317 combines a hand-painted glass diffuser by Kauklahden Glass with an aspen slat shade, brass fittings and birch details. Delicate floral decorations on the glass bring a gentle touch of colour, while the wooden slats create a warm, inviting light.
Often mistakenly attributed to Paavo Tynell, this model is a design by Gunnel Nyman from Idman’s own lighting collection of the period. The combination of natural materials and decorative glass gives it a distinctive character, suitable for a dining room, bedroom or welcoming entrance.
The lamp retains its original condition, which we have chosen to preserve. The aspen slat shade is in good condition, although its inner cardboard lining shows wear that is not visible from the outside. The glass diffuser has a small chip. The brass displays an attractive aged patina, and the lamp retains its Idman label. Please refer to the photographs for condition details.
Gunnel Nyman was Idman’s principal designer in the late 1940s. Her lighting designs were as varied as her art glass, reflecting a versatile approach to form, materials and light.
