An impressive and substantial brutalist decorative bowl by Finnish artist Kaj Blomqvist, crafted in solid cast bronze during the 1970s. Considerably larger and heavier than the more commonly encountered examples, this sculptural piece possesses a commanding presence that makes it equally suitable as a centrepiece or as a standalone work of art.
The organically textured surface recalls weathered rock formations or molten earth, contrasting beautifully with the selectively polished bronze highlights that catch the light and emphasize the dramatic relief. Raised on three discreet feet, the bowl appears to float above the surface while showcasing Blomqvist’s unmistakable sculptural language.
Kaj Blomqvist became known for his expressive cast bronze objects that bridged sculpture and functional design. His works embody the Scandinavian interpretation of Brutalism, where raw, tactile surfaces are balanced by refined craftsmanship and exceptional material quality. His bronze bowls, boxes and vases remain highly collectible examples of Finnish decorative arts from the late modernist period.
This large example is signed by the artist and displays a beautiful natural patina acquired over decades. At the moment, we also have a smaller one listed seperately, please see last photo.
