Pair of Outdoor Patinated Copper Ceiling / Wall Lamps, Finland 1950s

4080,00

A rare and characterful pair of brutalist ceiling lamps executed entirely in copper, originally commissioned for the entrance canopy of the Kesko building, later known as the Oulu Energy House, dating to the 1950s in Oulu. Designed for installation beneath a tilted exterior ceiling, the lamps formed part of a cohesive set of four, of which this is the first pair and the second is also listed separately here on 1stdibs.

While the exact manufacturer is undocumented, the lamps are most likely attributable to either Idman or Itsu, both active in Finland during the period. The design bears a strong resemblance to the work of Paavo Tynell, whose sculptural yet restrained approach to metalwork is echoed in the angular forms and pin detailing.

The lamps are crafted in solid copper, now presenting a richly developed surface with a deep, naturally aged patina. The finish is expressive and tactile, lending a distinctly architectural presence that complements both modernist and more eclectic interiors. Their sculptural quality allows for versatile placement, and while originally conceived as ceiling fixtures, they may also be mounted as wall lights.

Please note that although designed for a semi-exterior setting, the lamps are not waterproof and should be installed in covered places or under ceilings. Both lamps remain in good vintage condition with updated electrical components, ready for use.
