A large and exceptionally rare ceiling lamp by Paavo Tynell and Gunnel Nyman from the 1930s manufactured by Taito Oy and the art glass shade by Riihimäen Lasi Oy. A stunning work of craftsmanship and artistic design combining art glass by Nyman who was one of the leading glass designers in Finland, and the intricate design and metal work by the leading lighting designer Paavo Tynell. The design is closely similar to one they made for the Swedish Theater in Helsinki seen in one of the pictures, yet has more decorative details like the brass circular leaves Tynell used in some of his designs. The fixture features also crystals hanging over the large glass shade, which itself resembles a huge tulip in full blossom. The lamp is quite sizable and would fit perfectly in larger spaces.
The fixture is in it’s original condition and unpolished. It has a wonderful patina on the brass parts. Although it is not stamped, it is undisputed that it’s by the two design giants as it carries elements documented to be by them seen in other lamps and has all the Taito parts of the period in the 1930s during which Gynnel Nyman worked with Tynell in Taito between 1932-1938.
An exceptional piece that is exceedingly rare, and at this time of almost a 100 years later, could very well be unique.
